It’s New Year’s Eve, glass of wine in hand, and we promise ourselves we’ll “eat healthily this year”.

It’s the eternal and universal commitment we make annually.

For a couple of days it’s easy. We’ve got our plan, we’re resisting the sweets, the biscuits the chips, then we ….well, …we ‘slip-up’.

I get it, we’re all human. We’ve all slipped before.

But ….the beautiful thing is

…it’s not the slip-up that scuppers weight loss.

It’s what we do post-slip that most impacts our dress size in 2016.

Four insidious little words

We could say “Oh, well, so I ate more than I needed” and immediately forgive ourselves, face forward and get back on track.

But what we usually say is…

I’ve totally stuffed up!” … which leads to “I may as well keep stuffing myself”.

With those four words, we abdicate our responsibility for our own body. We hand away our power as we give ourselves permission to eat ourselves silly. It’s a very slippery and depressing slope.

Those four words are insidious. In that moment instead of noticing any pre-slip progress, we contemplate what a failure we are and how “nothing ever works for me anyway.”

So, next time you have a slip up, and trust me, you will – it’s part an integral part of the journey– here are several responses you might try on:

– “Hmmm, I wonder why I ate that?”
– “Curious, I wonder what’s going on for me?”
– “Huh, how might I handle that next time?”

You see?

Asking yourself any one of these questions instead of giving up on yourself, takes you down a much more helpful path.

A path where you’re curious instead of judgmental.

Try a gentler question and notice how you get a much softer feeling inside. And that softer feeling, my darling, will allow you to absorb your slip and keep moving forwards, towards your happy shape and size.

Love etc, Avril
